Halona Blowhole - The Hidden Gem of Oahu Island

At a glance, Halona Blowhole is a hidden gem on the Southeastern shore of Oahu. Formed by molten lava tubes from volcanic eruptions thousands of years ago, the Halona Blowhole Oahu is one of the most beautiful natural wonders in Hawaii. The blowhole is located in an area known as Halona Beach Cove, a famous movie setting spot on the island of Oahu. It is interesting to note that this was the site of a love scene between Burt Lancaster and Deborah Kerr in the award-winning film From Here to Eternity as well as a fountain of youth scene in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

When the waves and surf are right, the blowhole shoots out a water spray, up to 300 feet in the air with the large waves. It’s the tourist favorite and the larger waves mean the larger the water spray. Timing for the perfect picture can be a little bit tricky but it’s worth waiting. One tip for you is to listen for a deep humming sound as the ocean tide rushes in. Remember the blowhole is best looked at from a distance. In addition, on a calm day, visitors can expect to see the green sea turtles swimming and feeding from the top of the cliffs.

The best time to visit Halona Beach Cove is during summer months as the beach is calmer. The drive to Halona Blowhole is just about 20 minutes from Waikiki. Walking down to the beach is sometimes steep and rocky, so it is better to wear comfortable walking shoes. Don’t forget to bring your camera to take some unique pictures at the famous Halona Blowhole. Last but not least, remember to put on sunscreen, bring a hat, sunglasses and some water with you to avoid getting burned.

Known as Hawaii’s top scenic attraction, Halona Blowhole in Honolulu is a must-stop destination when visiting the island of Oahu. Moreover, the Halona Blowhole Lookout offers stunning views of the coastline and outer islands. Enjoy your vacation on this lovely island.
