The Mark From The Pass: Fort Derussy Beach Park

Fort DeRussy Beach Park is a 71-acre beach-front military reservation in Waikiki, Honolulu, Hawaii. It is almost entirely open to the public.  Fort DeRussy Beach Park covers about a fourth of all beaches in Waikiki and has the largest beaches in all of Waikiki.  The large park has lots of amenities open to the public.

Fort DeRussy Beach Park is a very large grassy park area with a large and excellent beach along the Waikiki strip. Your best bet for parking is either in the boat harbor lot (to the northwest) which has free and paid spots or at the paid lot across the street from the beach park (north of the Kalia Rd and Saratoga Rd intersection, enter from Kalia Rd).

History of US Army’s famous museum

Fort DeRussy in Honolulu is one of five Forts DeRussy in the US. There are two in Lousiana and another in Kentucky.  Fort DeRussy Beach Park is named after General René Edward De Russy (1789–1865), a Westpoint graduate who served in the Civil War.  Fort DeRussy Beach Park is located where the former Battery Randolph was located, an R & R for US servicemen during the Vietnam War. The U.S. Army Museum of Hawaii honors, interprets, communicates, and presents the history of the Army in the Pacific centered on Hawaii's contributions to our nation's defense and its Army heritage through exhibits, educational programs, and the preservation of historic material.

If you are wondering about facilities, we got it here!

On the beach side you'll find a beautiful piece of Waikiki that's quite large and thus not as packed as some of the main (center) Waikiki areas can get. You'll have bathrooms and showers at your disposal and because you're right next to a few hotels you'll also have easy access (via a beach walk) to food and drinks at those properties or the onsite concession stands.

Fort DeRussy has many facilities open to the public.  Fort DeRussy has two public restrooms/showers on opposite ends of the beach.  Fort DeRussy Beach Park is handicap accessible, so if you are planning for an itinerary here, don’t be afraid of inconvenience.
